Mark Schembri
The University of Queensland
Professor Mark Schembri is the Director of the Institute for Molecular Bioscience (IMB) Centre for Superbug Solutions at the University of Queensland, Australia. His expertise lies in molecular microbiology, antibiotic resistance and bacterial pathogenesis. Prof Schembri’s research investigates the genetics, genomics, virulence and biofilm properties of antibiotic resistant uropathogenic E. coli that cause urinary tract, bloodstream and CNS infections, diseases of major significance to human health. He has published 260 papers, which have attracted >29,500 citations and he has an H-Index = 88. His research has led to seminal discoveries on the role of adhesins in uropathogenic E. coli infection and biofilm formation, and the genomics and evolution of antibiotic resistant uropathogenic E. coli clones. Prof Schembri is President of the Australian Society for Microbiology, a founding Director of the Urinary Tract Infection Global Alliance, and has served on the US ASM Biofilms International Scientific Program Committee for the last four conferences.
