Tom Coenye
Ghent University
Tom Coenye is a full professor at Ghent University (Belgium) and co-directs the Laboratory of Pharmaceutical Microbiology (LPM). His current research is focused on the identification of molecular mechanisms of reduced susceptibility in microbial biofilms, using a wide range of different techniques. The LPM collaborate with scientists from very different backgrounds (including chemists, physicists, mathematical modellers and engineers) to elucidate mechanisms of biofilm tolerance and resistance at the molecular level. At the same time the group is aiming to translate novel insights in fundamental biofilm biology to innovative approaches for diagnosis, susceptibility testing and treatment. Biofilm-related research at LPM is currently mainly focused on biofilm-related respiratory tract and prosthetic joint infections. He is (co-)author of approx. 380 publications, including papers in internationally peer-reviewed journals, book chapters, and books; these have been cited over 46200 times (according to Google Scholar). Tom Coenye was vice-chair (2013-2016) and chair (2017-2021) of the European Society for Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases Study Group on Biofilms and is currently the chair of the International Scientific Advisory Board of the UK’s National Biofilms Innovation Centre (NBIC). He is co-editor in chief of the journal Biofilm (since 2018) and senior editor for mBio (since 2025).
