Darla Goeres
LEPABE
Dr. Darla Goeres is the Industrial Coordinator at the Center for Biofilm Engineering and ERA Chair at LEPABE, Faculty of Engineering, University of Porto. Dr. Goeres has over twenty-five years of experience researching biofilm bacteria in industrial systems. She has studied biofilms found in beer draught lines, Danish district heating distribution pipes, anaerobic biofilms in soured oil fields, biofilms in recreational water systems, and evaluated various treatment strategies for killing, removing and/or preventing biofilm formation in the built environment. As the industrial coordinator, Darla has the opportunity to engage with the CBE's industrial partners, helping them to understand the complexity biofilm brings to the conversation while linking them with the CBE researchers who envision endless possibilities and solutions for biofilm. She came into this role after leading the Standardized Biofilm Testing Laboratory for 20+ years where she and her team developed and validated the first standardized biofilm test methods for growing, treating, sampling, and analyzing biofilm bacteria that enable for informed decision making at the regulatory level. Her methods are referenced in the US EPA guidelines companies must follow to achieve a "kills biofilm" label claim. While at the U of Porto, Darla is excited to lead a team working to expand how we understand and apply the concept of reproducibility in terms of biofilm form and function.
